bar-materials machining unit

A turning unit that specifies cutting on the outer periphery, inner periphery, front face, or back face of round barstock.

C-chamfering

The placement of a chamfer on a corner.

common data

Data specified in the common unit. Common data specifies basic elements of the part, such as workpiece material, rough stock dimensions, and maximum spindle RPM.

common unit

The portion of a Mazatrol program that specifies basic elements of the part, such as workpiece material, rough stock dimensions, and maximum spindle RPM. The common unit is assigned unit number "0."

coordinate measuring unit

A unit of a Mazatrol program that specifies the motion of a sensor when coordinates must be determined or workpiece coordinates must be set.

copy-machining unit

A turning unit that specifies cutting along the unique profiles of cast or forged parts.

corner-machining unit

A turning unit that specifies cutting at uncut locations left over from the bar-materials or copy-machining units. Portions of the corners on a workpiece occasionally are left uncut due to the shape of the tool or toolholder.

CPT-X

The infeed point in the X-axis. The infeed point is the location of the tool tip when it begins cutting.

CPT-Z

The infeed point in the Z-axis. The infeed point is the location of the tool tip when it begins cutting.

C-SP

The desired surface speed of the spindle. C-SP data is specified in surface feet per minute (sfm).

dep-1

A field that specifies the maximum cutting depth for each roughing pass.

display select key

Key on the lower left of the Matrix display that toggles between available displays and their particular menu keys. The display select key is sometimes called the chapter left key.

EIA/ISO

Electronics Industry Association/International Organization for Standardization. Two separate organizations that recommend standards for the transmission of data between devices. EIA/ISO, or "G-code," programming is a means of programming CNC machines that is standardized for use with various controllers.

end point

A data field in the shape sequence of some turning units that specifies the exact location of the end of a particular shape. The starting point fields are SPT-X and SPT-Z, and the end point fields are FPT-X and FPT-Z..

end unit

The portion of a Mazatrol program that specifies program execution and machine behavior at the completion of machining.

F2

A finishing tool. Data for the finishing tool is specified in the tool sequence of a turning unit.

facing

A turning operation that involves feeding a cutting tool across an end of a cylindrical workpiece to create a flat surface and shorten its length. Facing involves feeding the tool across the workpiece end in the X-axis at a particular depth in the Z-axis.

facing unit

A turning unit that specifies cutting on the front or back face of the workpiece. Facing involves feeding the tool across the workpiece end in the X-axis at a particular depth in the Z-axis.

finishing allowance

A small amount of material to be cut by the finishing tool. The finishing allowance is left over from roughing and allows the finishing tool to achieve a particular surface quality.

FIN-X

The amount of material in the X-axis to be removed by the finishing tool. FIN-X data should be entered as diameter data.

FIN-Z

The amount of material in the Z-axis to be removed by the finishing tool.

FPT-X

The end point of a shape in the X-axis. Together with FPT-Z, FPT-X defines the end point of a shape in the shape sequence of a turning unit.

FPT-Z

The end point of a shape in the Z-axis. Together with FPT-X, FPT-Z defines the end point of a shape in the shape sequence of a turning unit.

FR

The desired feed rate of the tool. FR data is specified in inches per revolution (ipr).

grooving unit

A turning unit that specifies groove cutting on the outer or inner peripheries, as well as the front or back faces of the workpiece.

linear

Tool movement in a straight line. In the shape sequence of the bar-materials machining unit, linear movement involves feeding the tool across the periphery of the workpiece in the Z-axis at a particular depth in the X-axis.

manual program machining unit

A unit of a Mazatrol program that complements the turning units and allows the programming of unusual tool paths. This unit is used when a tool path cannot be generated automatically by one of the eight turning units.

material

The first data field in the common unit. The menu for material, or workpiece composition, includes cast iron, ductile iron, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, among several others.

materials shape unit

A unit of a Mazatrol program that complements the common unit data and allows the programmer to define shapes of cast or forged materials.

maximum length

The fourth data field in the common unit. The total dimension of the workpiece in the Z-axis, including the portion to be faced.

maximum outside diameter

The second data field in the common unit. Maximum outer diameter is the maximum workpiece dimension in the X-axis, and is usually equal to the nominal size of the barstock. For some molded workpieces, the maximum outer diameter can be larger than the portion of the workpiece being held by the chuck.

maximum spindle speed

The sixth data field in the common unit. Maximum spindle speed in revolutions per minute (RPM) can be specified if a particular run of parts is not to exceed a certain RPM.

Mazatrol

A computer numerical control developed by Mazak that features conversational programming.

Mazatrol program menu key

A menu key that specifies the creation of a Mazatrol program. This menu key appears after a new work number is entered.

M-code

An EIA/ISO program code used to signal an action from a miscellaneous group of commands. M codes change cutting tools, turn on or turn off the coolant, spindle, or workpiece clamps, etc.

M-code unit

A unit of a Mazatrol program that specifies miscellaneous function codes.

minimum inside diameter

The third data field in the common unit. Minimum inside diameter is the hole dimension in the X-axis at its smallest diameter.

pitch

The distance between a point on an individual groove to the corresponding point on the next groove.

program display

A screen that shows all the information contained in a Mazatrol program. The program display is accessed bypressing the program menu key.

program menu key

A soft key at the bottom of the display that accesses the program display. The program display reveals all information contained in a Mazatrol program.

R1

A roughing tool. Data for the roughing tool is specified in the tool sequence of a turning unit.

R-chamfering

The creation of a rounded chamfer.

shape sequence

One of the three components of a Mazatrol turning unit. The shape sequence specifies data associated with the machining dimensions shown in a part drawing and includes starting and end point coordinates and surface roughness.

SPT-X

The starting point of a shape in the X-axis. Together with SPT-Z, SPT-X defines the starting point of a shape in the shape sequence of a turning unit.

SPT-Z

The starting point of a shape in the Z-axis. Together with SPT-X, SPT-Z defines the starting point of a shape in the shape sequence of a turning unit.

starting point

A data field in the shape sequence of some turning units that specifies the exact location of the start of a particular shape. The starting point fields are SPT-X and SPT-Z.

subprogram

Separate from the main program, a program that executes a series of operations that occur multiple times during the machining cycle. Subprograms shorten and simplify programming.

subprogram unit

A unit of a Mazatrol program that specifies a subprogram when a repeated movement is programmed or when one movement appears in several different programs. Subprograms shorten and simplify programming.

taper

Tool movement that causes a gradual decrease or increase in workpiece diameter. In the shape sequence of the bar-materials machining unit, taper movement involves feeding the tool in both the X- and Z-axes at a particular depth.

threading lead

The axial travel of a threaded device as it makes one revolution.

threading unit

A turning unit that specifies thread cutting on the outer or inner peripheries of the workpiece.

tool measuring unit

A unit of a Mazatrol program that specifies the measurement of tool data during cutting and automatically corrects the tool to account for wear.

tool sequence

One of the three components of a Mazatrol turning unit. The tool sequence is associated with the tool operation and includes data such as surface speed and feed per revolution.

turning drilling unit

A turning unit that specifies drilled holes on the face at the workpiece centerline.

turning tapping unit

A turning unit that specifies tapping predrilled holes on the face at the workpiece centerline.

turning unit

The portion of a Mazatrol program that specifies the particular types of cuts required to make a finished parts.The eight available turning units automatically generate tool paths based on specified data.

unit

A single portion of a Mazatrol program. Mazatol program units are discrete areas where programming information is specified and include the common unit and end unit.

unit data

One of the three components of a Mazatrol turning unit. Fields for unit data appear after a particular turning unit is chosen, and appear on the same line as the name of the unit.

work face

The fifth data field in the common unit. The dimension in the Z-axis signifying the portion of the workpiece being faced off the end of the workpiece.

work number

The unique identifying number for a Mazatrol program. Work numbers may consist of any combination of the 32 alphanumeric characters and certain symbols.

Work number menu key

A soft key at the bottom of the display that accesses a list of work numbers of the programs that have already been entered into the control memory. The work number menu key appears at the bottom of the screen in the program display.

Work number select window

A list of work numbers of the programs that have already been entered into the control memory. The work number select window allows you to choose a program.

workpiece measuring unit

A unit of a Mazatrol program that prompts a sensor to measure the dimensions of the workpiece.
