The pursuit of operational excellence is a journey, not a destination. For two decades, thousands of professionals and organizations have used the Lean Certification program as a guide on that path.
This year marks 20 years of Lean Certification, a program that has become a trusted standard for continuous improvement practitioners worldwide. Established through a partnership among SME, the Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME), and the Shingo Institute, the certification was designed to close a critical gap between lean knowledge and real-world results.
In the early 2000s, the lean landscape was fragmented. Many organizations offered training, but there was no consistent way to measure whether someone could apply lean principles effectively in practice.
To address this, SME, AME, and the Shingo Institute formed the Lean Certification Alliance:
Together, they created a rigorous, peer-reviewed certification that validates not only what someone knows but also what they can do. The result is a program grounded in real-world application and shaped by a broad community of practitioners across industries.
What makes Lean Certification effective is its tiered approach. It reflects how lean capability develops over time, from hands-on problem solving to enterprise leadership.
Unlike programs that focus primarily on testing knowledge, Lean Certification emphasizes applied learning. Candidates are expected to demonstrate measurable impact through real projects, not just pass an exam.
At the core of the program, there are three progressive levels:
Lean Bronze Certification: Tactical Expertise
Lean Silver Certification: Value Stream Leadership
Lean Gold Certification: Enterprise Transformation
As organizations continue to face pressure to improve performance, adapt quickly, and deliver greater value, the need for lean thinking remains strong across industries—from manufacturing to healthcare to finance.
"Twenty years ago, we set out to build something the Lean world had never seen: a practitioner-driven certification grounded in real work, real results, and deep respect for people. As a founding member, it’s been remarkable to watch the AME/SME/Shingo Institute Lean Certification program grow into the global benchmark for operational excellence. The next twenty years matter even more, and this community is ready to lead them." - Jim Garrick, Partner at Maxability LLC
The partnership between SME, AME, and the Shingo Institute helps ensure that Lean Certification remains relevant and respected. Twenty years in, the mission remains the same: build capability, drive results, and create cultures that sustain continuous improvement.
